Reaching out to the Life Sciences industry—Spring 2017

Busy Spring Provides Opportunities for Life Sciences Outreach Abroad, Nationally and in New Jersey
Princeton's Office of Corporate Engagement and Foundation Relations, Office of Technology Licensing and Princeton Entrepreneurship Council took advantage of the busy Spring conference season to reach out to the life sciences industry on behalf of Princeton’s research and innovation.
This year, the University was represented at BIO Europe Spring and at BIO International, as Princeton staff met with selected companies and shared potential research and technology licensing opportunities. At BIO International, the University was part of the sizable ChooseNJ exhibition and marketing effort.
Back home in New Jersey, the University was among the higher ed institutions invited to host a booth and do a brief talk at the May 23 BioPartnering Conference of NJ Bio. CEFR’s Dean Edelman used the presentation to explain the many ways industry can engage with Princeton, highlight the role of OTL’s New Ventures Associate Tony Williams and promote the Fall 2017 opening of the off-campus Innovation Center.
The primary focus of the BIO-related conferences is to develop and maintain new and existing relationships, out of which come opportunities to explore mutual interests in research, collaborations and technology licensing. But the conferences also offer a setting to learn about current industry research priorities and relevant vendors, such as CRO’s that offer translational services used in drug discovery and development. In addition, conference organizers promote one-to-one, in-person meetings among attendees through an online “partnering portal” that allows for research and scheduling well in advance of the event. Princeton representatives met with more than 60 companies over the course of the three conferences.

Dean Edelman of CEFR also participated in an industry roundtable in New Jersey on June 28 when the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) released a new report entitled “Research in Your Backyard: Developing Cures, Creating Jobs, Pharmaceutical Clinical Trials in New Jersey.” The event was co-hosted by PhRMA, the HealthCare Institute of New Jersey (HINJ) and We Work for Health New Jersey (WWFH-NJ) and held at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. The event featured a panel discussion of industry experts moderated by HINJ.
