Princeton among Top 100 U.S. universities for patents

June 6, 2024

Princeton is among the Top 100 U.S. universities granted U.S. utility patents in rankings released this week by the National Academy of Inventors (NAI).

Princeton was listed at No. 50 on the list, which NAI said was based on data obtained from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on patents granted in 2023.

Earlier, the NAI put Princeton at No. 79 on its list of the Top 100 universities worldwide granted U.S. utility patents.

Utility patents are the most common granted by the USPTO, which also refers to them as "patents for invention." They are issued for the invention of a new and useful process, machine, manufacture, or composition of matter, or a new and useful improvement thereof.
